South Walnut Street Closure for Sewer Repairs: What Mansfield Residents Need to Know
By Maria Delgado-Wright · July 17, 2026
For five days, drivers, downtown workers, and customers will have to route around a closed block of South Walnut Street. The stretch between East First Street and East Second Street in downtown Mansfield closed at noon July 16 for sanitary sewer repairs and is scheduled to stay shut through the end of July 21, with no traffic allowed through the work zone. The closure affects a corridor near the Leland Hotel, a nine-story historic building at the southwest corner of Park Avenue West and South Walnut Street.
The City of Mansfield Service Complex is conducting the repairs. Tracy Rannels, the Sewer Supervisor and contact person for street closure communications, has previously issued similar notices for infrastructure work, including catch basin repairs on Sherwood Drive in September 2025 and Walker Lake Road and Home Road intersection work in February 2026. Construction signs will be posted at the work site. The City Service Complex can be reached with questions at 419-755-9806 during business hours, Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The facility is located at 480 Park Avenue East, Mansfield, Ohio 44905.
The city advises motorists to plan alternate routes, using East First Street or East Second Street to cross over the closure. During the Main Street Improvement Project, city materials emphasized that downtown businesses remain open and accessible on foot, with parking and pedestrian detours in place. The current closure notice does not specify whether pedestrian access or sidewalks along South Walnut will remain open during the sewer repairs.
The closure notice was posted on the city website on July 16, 2026, with the closure effective at noon that same day — leaving no publicly documented advance window for affected businesses. Street closure notifications are issued via immediate press releases posted on the city website, with Rannels listed as the primary contact. During the Main Street Improvement Project, the city committed to giving advance notice for lane or road closures and sharing updates in partnership with Downtown Mansfield Inc., the economic and community development organization for the downtown area. Downtown Mansfield Inc. can be reached at 419-522-0099, with offices at 128 North Main Street, Mansfield, OH 44902. For businesses affected by downtown construction, Mario Davidson serves as Business Counselor at NECIC, offering direct outreach assistance, and can be reached at 419-522-1611 or [email protected].
The Service Complex also announced a temporary closure on Davis Road between Overlook Road and Shepard Road for sanitary sewer repairs from July 1–10, 2026. Robert P. Bianchi, P.E., is the City Engineer and designated contact for technical and scope questions on major projects, including wastewater and infrastructure work. The South Walnut notice provided the affected blocks, repair dates, and a phone number, but did not include detour maps, pedestrian access details, or confirmation that downtown businesses received direct outreach.
